I just had my first outbreak of herpes a few months ago, I don't know who gave it to me. Is it true that the virus can stay dormit for years before the first outbreak appears?

Yes, that's what my doctors told me as well. I'd been in what I presumed to have been a monogamous relationship for approximately 2 years prior to my diagnosis. I just had to accept that I'd never know the truth and move on. That was 1994 (before the internet was even invented) and communities like this didn't exist.

When I was tested for HSV2 it was because I had an outbreak...but when I did my panel for all stds at the same time it did not show in my blood...no antibodies --- what that meant is that it was NEW, takes 4-6 months to show up in your blood. So that would help you know if it was new or if you had it from long ago.

Yes, that is what I have read. You could have contracted it years ago. I am in. your situation as well. Just diagnosed 2 week ago and not sure where mine came from. Was just dating one person for a year. Tough to accept this is my new situation.
